From the Director of Boarding
Term 2 so far...
The highlight of this week has been my trip with Mr Chris Stearn to the Taroom Show. It was wonderful to connect with this community as we had some great conversations with Old Boys, our current families, as well as some boarders who are signed up to attend TGS in the years to come. In particular I wish to give my thanks to Rob, Jo and Oli Lethbridge who not only helped us tremendously at the show but were wonderful hosts on Tuesday morning when we were able to visit their property.
Overall, it has been a wonderful start to Term 2 with our boarders. I have been impressed with the commitment they have been showing to their extra-curricular activities. For example, we have some boarders involved with the Footloose musical who spend most of their Sundays in rehearsal as well as an evening or two during the week. This is in addition to their sporting commitments. Playing football and training for that twice a week in the afternoon and if our boarders play rugby or basketball as well, there can also be some training sessions before school.
Whilst this is not the case for every boarder, I am aware that Term 2 is one of the busiest for our boys. The public holidays over the past few weeks mean that the schedule for all of these activities has also been changing. Our boarding staff have been working extremely hard to support our boarders in their endeavours, there have been plenty of conversations with boarders about planning their time to achieve an appropriate balance of study, extra-curricular and rest time.
In regard to study, Term 2 does have a strong assessment focus. To this end, our Academic Enrichment program will commence again next week. Our Years 8-10s will come together on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for prep so that they can access the assistance of teachers and tutors in the Purves block as well as collaborate with those boarders in their class.
Nutrition for Wellbeing
As we can see from the workload of many of our boarders in Term 2, our experiences last year have identified this term as being really important for boarders' wellbeing and a great opportunity to develop our boarders' ‘life skills’, their understanding of how their day-to-day activities are interconnected and can influence their overall wellbeing.
To that end, Term 2 did start with a presentation to our boarders about nutrition. This presentation was focussed upon how our boarders can improve their understanding of how their food choices can impact their energy levels and provide them with the ‘fuel’ to study and play to the best of their ability. The four main topics of the presentation are listed below, and Rhiannon gave some practical examples to our boarders based upon the menus available in the Dining Hall.
- Nutrition to fuel you through your day to day / general wellness
- Putting together a meal to fuel your body
- Nutrients to consider when being active / engaged in sport
- Myths vs fact for supplement use.
This presentation has encouraged many of our boarders to make better choices in their diet. So, I can ensure that the Dining Hall menu reflects the choices our boarders desire, and I have surveyed our boarders this week. I would like to take the opportunity to also survey parents, so that I can gain a clear understanding of your wishes for your sons and to correlate the feedback I get from the boys at school compared to what is communicated home. End of Term 2 Transport
The final subject I wish to raise in this edition of The Boarders' Telegraph is the transport for the end of Term 2.
Due to Term 2 being a nine-week term and our GPS sport commitments needing nine rounds to complete a season, our traditional ‘boarders' travel day’ on the Friday is actually the final round of the Term 2 competitions. As such, we do have many of our boarders who will be playing sport on this day and who will need to be at school. To facilitate this, I have re-arranged some of the busses as well as organising staff so our boarding houses can stay open on the Friday night for the boarders who will have to travel on the Saturday, after their sports commitments are finished. An overview of the transport options is provided below and boarding staff will be working with boarders over the next few weeks to assist them with their planning. If you have any questions about the end of term, your son's Head of House is the best person to talk to.
