Few occasions capture the spirit of our boarding community quite like the annual Boarding Mothers' Lunch. It is an opportunity to celebrate the women who support our boys through every stage of their boarding journey and to acknowledge the trust they place in us when they entrust their sons to our care. Behind every boarder is a village of support and we are deeply grateful for the mothers whose encouragement helps make the boarding experience possible. We look forward to welcoming them this weekend and celebrating the important role they play in the life of our boarding community.

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our boarders, we were pleased to welcome Chartwells Dietician (an Accredited Practising Dietician and Accredited Sports Dietician), Ms Ellen Gleeson to the School on Thursday, 20 August. Ms Gleeson delivered an informative presentation focused on nutrition, ‘balancing their plate’ and the important role food plays in supporting learning, sport and overall wellbeing. The session provided valuable insights for our boys and encouraged them to think more intentionally about the food choices they make each day. The presentation included a sample meal plan and some online links. The presentation has been emailed to all boarders and parents can access the presentation via this link.

At this stage of the term, fatigue does impact our boarders and the colder weather diminishes boys' motivation and energy levels. With this in mind, we decided to change our usual Friday lunch routine and enjoy a more relaxed "picnic" style lunch outdoors. The boys made their own sub sandwiches, received a can of soft drink and a biscuit and took advantage of what turned out to be a glorious Toowoomba day. The change of routine was very well received and provided an excellent opportunity for the boys to enjoy some time together outside. I have received some great feedback from our boarders and it is certainly something we will look to incorporate more regularly in the future.

Our activities program has continued to provide diverse opportunities for boarders over the past fortnight. One highlight was a visit by Corfe boarders to the Intermediate TiGGA production of Lights in the Park. For several of the boys, it was their first experience attending a live stage production and they thoroughly enjoyed the performance. The positive response reinforced the value of exposing boys to a broad range of cultural experiences and it is something we will endeavour to offer more frequently through our activities program.

Another addition has been our first leatherwork activity, which attracted 14 enthusiastic participants. The boys have begun constructing a horse bridle and have thrown themselves into the project with great enthusiasm. It has been pleasing to see them develop new practical skills and I am looking forward to seeing the finished product in a few weeks' time.

Finally, the 2027 student leadership selection process is nearing completion. Across approximately nine hours of Prefect interviews, 14 boarders featured among the final field of 35 candidates who progressed to the interview stage. The quality of the interviews was inspiring, with applicants demonstrating a strong commitment to the School's values, presenting a range of practical initiatives aimed at further strengthening our school community. The thoughtfulness, maturity and leadership potential displayed throughout the process gives me great confidence that the 2027 leaders will continue to build upon the outstanding work of our 2026 leadership team.

As always, I thank our boarding families for their continued support and partnership throughout the term. We look forward to finishing the term strongly and continuing to provide opportunities that enrich the boarding experience for every boy.

As the rush and the roar of Term 3 approaches the final whistle, the boys in maroon remain steadfast in their pursuit of goals – personal, sporting or academic. In this vein we congratulate Blake (Agriculture), Ben P (English) and Will M (Science) on their Commendations and a mention to all of the Buffs who have contributed to a Detention count, which, at the time of writing, has potentially set us up for a last-minute tilt at getting off the foot of the ladder in the Headmaster’s Shield.

Thus, as we enter the term’s last quarter, I encourage all boys to remain engaged until the buzzer. This includes participation within the House Carnival on Thursday, 17 September. Term finishes at 3:10pm on this day and not before.

We continue to recognise our Buffs of the Week, with Walter, Tom H, Austin and Corben all being recognised for their efforts to showcase the best of the Boyce Brand – Humility, Hard Work and House First. A nod also to Nate McC (14), Eli (16) and Todd (21 again) who have all celebrated birthdays since I last wrote to you.

With the onset of the Grammar Downlands weekend, I look forward to seeing many of you in town across the various events occurring. Whilst I appreciate you may not be reading the Boyce Bugle from underneath the table of the Boarders Mothers’ Luncheon, I do hope those in attendance enjoyed what is always a special occasion.

The boys remain keen to make the most of the remaining chunk of the term. There has been a noticeable shift within our Year 12s, who have begun to reminisce and realise that the end of their TGS journey is fast approaching. Their fortnightly steak and eggs meal is up and running, with this week’s guest being none other than Todd. This opportunity to connect and share stories and memories is a wonderful idea and I applaud the boys on showing the initiative to make it happen.

Back by popular demand, Sunday, 6 September will see a tacos and tennis evening with boys paired up in fancy dress and enjoying a social hit before debating the finer points of their two-handed backhands over Mexican food. Boys have been reminded to ask if their tennis rackets can make the journey to Toowoomba if families are visiting. However, we will be able to provide equipment for those without. This event will begin at 4:30pm, with boys expected to return from leave, where possible, beforehand.

Finally, Grace has made it through the one-month milestone and often does her level best to ensure all East Toowoomba knows she is awake, particularly at 2:00am. Meg and Grace are both healthy and we continue to appreciate the kindness and support of the Boyce House community.

The boys are continuing to work through one of the most challenging periods of the school year, often referred to as the “Stretch Zone”. At this stage of the term, fatigue levels tend to be high, illness has often taken its toll and the combined demands of academic and co-curricular commitments can feel overwhelming. With the assessment period now ramping up, the boys have been encouraged to stay organised, make regular use of their Assessment Planners and seek support whenever needed. Whether it is attending Homework Club, accessing tutoring sessions, speaking with a member of the Corfe staff, leaning on their Year 10 mentors or simply asking a mate for assistance, making use of the support available can make a significant difference when multiple assessment items fall due at the same time.

With just three weeks remaining until a well-earned break, I would like to congratulate all of the boys for the way they have approached this demanding time of the term. I am incredibly proud of the 2026 Corfe cohort and the manner in which they approach their daily routines, show resilience when faced with challenges and look after one another.

Chinchilla Polocrosse

At the end of Week 5, Angus F, Tom T and Chett S represented TGS at the Chinchilla Polocrosse Carnival, with Hugh R also making the trip to support the boys. A fantastic weekend was enjoyed by all, filled with great competition, plenty of laughs and stories that are sure to be retold for years to come. One memorable highlight involved Tom stepping into the role of a “brumby chaser” when two horses decided to make a run for it, much to the amusement of everyone involved. The boys represented themselves and Corfe House admirably while enjoying a wonderful country sporting experience.

Intermediate TiGAA

The boys thoroughly enjoyed attending the Intermediate TiGAA production in Week 6, with several commenting that it was their first experience watching a live theatrical performance. Pleasingly, the evening sparked considerable interest in the performing arts, with a number of boys already expressing an interest in becoming involved in TiGAA next year.

The night was made even more enjoyable with a wonderful roast lamb dinner prepared by Chartwells prior to the performance, which the boys thoroughly appreciated. Following the show, we returned to Corfe House to continue the evening together, enjoying ham and cheese croissants and ice creams while reflecting on both the performance and the many highlights of the night. It was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to experience the arts, build connections and create memories with their peers.

Cross Country Success

The Ballarat course had no shortage of mud

Congratulations to Henry C, who represented Queensland at the Australian Athletics Cross Country Championships in Ballarat last weekend. Competing at a national championship for the first time, Henry delivered a strong performance, finishing 42nd out of 71 competitors in a challenging and highly competitive field. While he found the course demanding, Henry thoroughly enjoyed the experience and embraced the opportunity to test himself against some of the country’s best young distance runners. We are incredibly proud of Henry’s achievement and the dedication he has shown throughout the season.

Appreciation and Thank you

With the Boarders’ Mothers’ Luncheon taking place this week, it is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous work, dedication and support that Mrs Fletcher and Mrs Wright provide to the boys of Corfe House. We are extremely grateful for everything they do and the House simply could not function without them. I asked several Corfe boys to share how Mrs Fletcher and Mrs Wright have made a difference to their boarding experience this year.

Max Burrow

Mrs Fletcher has helped me to keep my room clean and organised. She is always happy, has a smile on her face and makes great afternoon tea. Mrs Wright brings us Saturday night snacks, which everyone enjoys. They are both kind and caring, even on the rough days.

Tom Twidale

Mrs Fletcher is amazing, kind and helpful. She looks after us and provides afternoon tea, which the boys really appreciate. Mrs Wright is always there for us and brings Saturday treats for everyone. They both make Corfe a better place by looking after the boys and bringing us treats to enjoy together.

Kaylem Atkinson

Mrs Fletcher has helped me with my washing and getting me to Junior School activities, while also helping the other boys get to where they need to be. Mrs Wright makes weekends fun by organising games and activities when we have spare time. They are both supportive and fun to be around. Thank you for making Corfe a safe, enjoyable and loving home for boys like me.

Mrs Fletcher has helped me become a better person by teaching and encouraging me with the little things, such as making my bed. She also helps the boys get up and ready for morning training. She is happy, encouraging and enthusiastic. Thank you for helping me grow and become the best version of myself each day.

A Team Effort

To Mrs Fletcher, Mrs Wright and every member of the Corfe staff, thank you for your continued efforts as we work together to care for and support each Corfe boy.

I would also like to acknowledge the wonderful contribution of Corfe Boarder Parent Support Representative, Kirbie Burrow, Max’s mum, who regularly assists Corfe parents with questions about the Day School and boarding life.

On a personal level, I am particularly grateful for Kirbie’s willingness to share important updates with families, particularly when there are very late changes to routines, activities or phone times. This line of communication is invaluable in a boarding environment, helping ensure that parents remain informed and are not left waiting or wondering.

Finally, to all our mums, dads, grandparents and guardians, thank you for everything you do to support the boys. Your encouragement, communication and involvement from a distance are greatly appreciated and play an important role in making Corfe House such a strong and caring community.

I would like to wish all boys and families a wonderful Grammar Downlands weekend. It is one of the great community weekends on the TGS calendar and provides a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with family and friends while enjoying the atmosphere and traditions that make this rivalry so special. Year 12 Reflections

As I sit down to write this, it is hard to believe that the end of Year 12 is now within sight. For many of us, boarding has been more than just a place to stay while attending school. It has been a second home, a place where friendships have been formed, challenges have been overcome and some of our most memorable experiences have taken place.

Looking back, I am grateful for everything that the boarding journey has provided. It has taught us resilience, independence and the importance of supporting those around us. The routines, traditions and shared experiences of life in Groom House have helped shape us into the young men we are today. While there have certainly been challenges along the way, they have often been the moments from which we learned the most.

As we approach the final weeks of Term 3, I would like to thank the many people who have supported us throughout this journey. To our parents and families, thank you for your unwavering encouragement, trust and sacrifice. Your support, often from a distance, has allowed us to make the most of every opportunity at TGS.

To the boarding staff and teachers who have invested so much in our growth, thank you for the care, guidance and encouragement you have shown throughout the years. The time and effort you dedicate to helping students succeed, both academically and personally, do not go unnoticed.

I would also like to acknowledge the younger boarders who contribute so positively to the culture of Groom House. Watching your enthusiasm and growth reminds us of our own beginnings. To my fellow Year 12 students, thank you for sharing this journey. The friendships, laughter and memories we have created together will remain with us long after we leave TGS.

With external examinations fast approaching, our focus now turns to finishing strongly and embracing the opportunities ahead. Graduation and Valedictory events will provide an opportunity to celebrate this significant milestone, but they will also mark the beginning of a new chapter.

While the future brings both excitement and uncertainty, I am confident that the lessons, values and relationships formed through boarding will remain with us. As we prepare to leave, we do so with gratitude for the journey behind us and optimism for the road ahead.

Groom House musings

As we move into the final three weeks of Term 3, it is worth taking a moment to reflect on what has been an incredibly busy and rewarding period for the boys of Groom House. The term has been packed with opportunities and challenges, with our boarders fully immersed in Rugby Union, Basketball and Chess, while balancing the demands of academic life and the routines of boarding school.

Like any busy term, there have been plenty of hurdles along the way. Head colds and influenza have certainly made their presence felt and we have seen our fair share of bumps, bruises and injuries. Yet what continues to impress is the way the boys respond to these challenges. Whether supporting a teammate from the sidelines, returning from injury, persevering through a demanding week of commitments, or simply helping a mate through a difficult day, the resilience and character displayed by our boys have been a defining feature of the term.

Alongside the challenges have come many memorable moments. From hard-fought contests on the rugby field and basketball court to confident performances in chess, the boys have represented both Groom House and Toowoomba Grammar School with pride. Equally important are the moments that often go unnoticed: the shared laughter in the boarding house, friendships strengthened through everyday experiences and the smiles that appear after a game, regardless of the result. These moments are what make boarding life such a unique and rewarding experience.

A sincere thank you must go to our dedicated boarding staff who continue to care for, guide and support the boys each day. Their commitment to creating a positive and supportive environment is greatly appreciated. Thank you also to our parents and families for your ongoing partnership, trust and support throughout the term.

With only three weeks remaining, families are encouraged to submit end-of-term leave arrangements in REACH as early as possible to assist with planning and administration.

I am also looking forward to catching up with many Groom families across the various functions and events this weekend. It promises to be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the strength of our boarding community and the many connections that make Groom House such a special place.

The end is near, the Last Full Term for Year 12

Sitting here writing this with a few of the Year 12 boys around me, it's hard to believe we're nearly done. With our last ever Grammar Downlands weekend and a couple of rugby games left, it's starting to feel that our time in Mackintosh is almost over. Looking back, it's not really the big events I'll miss the most. It's the everyday stuff. Having a laugh at meals, having yarns after prep, the random chats in the hallways and always having someone around to do something with.

After years of living together, the boys in this house have become more like brothers than just mates. Playing rugby this year with the boys has definitely been one of the highlights. Whether it was training, game days, or the bus trips, it was always better because of the people you were with. As the Formal Dinner gets closer, it makes you think about how much this place has meant to us.

Mackintosh has been more than just a boarding house. It's been our home. I'll miss seeing the boys every day, the banter and the friendships we've built over the years. Looking back, the best memories are the random ones. The laughs at dinner, the boys getting in trouble for something stupid and the times prep turned into something else. They're the stories we'll be talking about long after we leave. To the younger boys, get involved, have a crack at everything and make the most of your time here.

The years go way quicker than you think. Before you know it, you'll be sitting where we are now wondering where it all went. Most importantly, enjoy your time with the boys around you. That's what you'll remember most. The results and the schoolwork matter, but the mates and memories you make matter also, you need to embrace and enjoy the experience along the way.

Exchange and Experience from the Boys

Student Exchange - Kafu Okonogi, Japan

This term I had the chance to host a Japanese exchange student, Kafu, for three weeks and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding parts of boarding life this year. He was a great bloke and easy company and it didn’t take long for him to settle into the routine of the boarding house. Fitting into a new school, a new dorm and a completely different daily rhythm isn’t easy, but he handled it well and made an effort to get involved wherever he could. Kafu flew back to Japan on Sunday, 23 August 2026.

Over the three weeks we did the usual boarding house things. Meals, study time, sport, the general day-to-day but I also showed him a bit more of what Australia’s about outside of just the school routine. Little things like local places and pubs, the way we talk, how study is maybe relaxed compared to what he was used to. He was genuinely curious about all of it, asking questions and comparing it to life back home, which made for some pretty good conversations.

He clearly enjoyed his time here and honestly, I enjoyed having him around just as much. It’s one thing to read about a different culture or learn a language in a classroom, but having someone actually living alongside you gives you a much better sense of it. It also worked both ways he was keen to learn about how things run here, and I was just as keen to learn from him.

Having him around also gave me a lot more opportunities to practise my Japanese in a real, everyday way. Rather than just working through vocab or grammar on my own, I was actually using it. I was asking him things, getting corrected when I got it wrong, picking up small phrases that you don’t really come across unless you’re speaking with someone who grew up with the language. It made the whole learning process feel a lot more practical and helped with my speaking assignment I had at the time.

Overall, hosting Kafu was a great experience from start to finish. It gave me a better understanding of another culture, pushed my Japanese along faster than I expected and made for a genuinely good couple of weeks in the boarding house. It’s something I’d recommend to anyone who gets the opportunity. You definitely get a lot more out of it than you might expect.

I look forward to reconnecting with Kafu, in Japan, at the end of the year on the return exchange.

Student Exchange - Max Tate, Oakham College UK

The student exchange between Oakham School and Toowoomba Grammar School means way more than just a standard trip away. It is an eye-opening experience that connects two opposite worlds, connected only by language, creating strong bonds between the schools, lifelong friendships and memories that stay with you forever.

Bringing the Schools Closer Together

First off, this exchange does wonders for the relationship between the two schools. Oakham and Toowoomba Grammar get to share their different ways of teaching and learning and we experience the difference classes and timetables. It helps both students understand how people on the other side of the world live and study, which makes everyone involved much more open-minded towards different ideas and cultures.

Friendships for Life

The best part for the students is building connections that actually last a lifetime. Staying with boarders and host family means you are thrown right into the deep end, living their daily life and bonding over everyday activities. You start as total strangers, but by the end of the term, you are good mates. Even after flying back home, I know that everyone will stay in touch online, creating strong connections through experiences which last long into adulthood.

Rugby and Travel Highlights

Landing in the surprisingly mild Australian winter, I got to experience Toowoomba Grammar’s surreal rugby tradition firsthand. The atmosphere at the Saturday home games was exceptional with the whole School chanting and supporting the First XV team surround the iconic Old Boys' Memorial Oval. On the weekends I was fortunate enough to travel and see the iconic sights. Visiting Sydney was fabulous, seeing the Opera House in person and walking around the iconic Bondi Beach. Followed by heading up to the Gold Coast for the sandy beaches and the breathtaking skyline was the perfect way to finish the trip.

Good for Everyone

In the end, I truly think this exchange is an experience for anyone and everyone. If you get that chancee you should go. It puts both schools on the map globally, gives students friends for life in another country and leaves you with the best memories ever. It pushes everyone out of their comfort zone and helps us grow up, developing key social skills and experience interacting with strangers who share seemingly zero cultural connection with yourself. In my opinion, this exchange was the best thing I could’ve spent my Summer doing and I hope this exchange continues for as long as these two schools maintain connection. I want to thank everyone involved, the Mackintosh House boys and both schools for making the exchange possible.

Over the Peak and Down the Hill

As we head into the final weeks of Term 3, Stephens House has plenty to be proud of and plenty still to look forward to. It has been a busy stretch for the boys, with schoolwork, sport, boarding routines and House commitments all competing for time and energy.

At this stage of the term, it can be tempting to look ahead to the holidays, but this is also when our boys need to dig in, stay organised and finish strongly. With exams fast approaching, positive study habits, asking for help early and making good use of prep time will be important over the coming weeks. Around the House, there have been many pleasing moments, from boys supporting one another on the sporting field to the everyday conversations, laughs and small acts of kindness that make boarding life so enjoyable. For our Year 12s, the final part of the year is beginning to feel very real, with many last experiences still ahead of them. We hope they embrace these moments, lead well and enjoy their time together. Stephens House continues to be a place where effort, friendship and pride matter, and we look forward to finishing the term in a positive and purposeful way.

I would also like to thank the staff in Stephens House for their consistency, energy and commitment to getting to know the boys as well as they can. We are fortunate to be part of a House that looks out for one another and takes real pride in being Stephens Sharks. Mr Tranberg’s amazing afternoon teas have also been a welcome boost for the boys after long days in class and afternoons spent battling the winter weather.

Well done to Joshua Pye, who is the current holder of Stephens of the Week. Josh is a quiet achiever in the House and is consistently impressive with his manners, presentation and respectful approach. We are very lucky to have Josh as part of Stephens House.

Surprisingly, there have been no birthdays during the month of August, which has given Mrs Dodd a well-earned rest from making caramel slice for the boys’ birthdays. September, however, will no doubt keep her on her toes. As a quick update in this space, there are only three weeks remaining until the due date of the third and final instalment of Dodd 3.0.

77th Grammar Downlands

On Saturday, 29 August the 77th Grammar Downlands game will be held at Downlands College. TGS Spirit Squad member and Stephens House Year 12, Harry has provided an insight on what the day means for a Year 12 boy experiencing his last game as a student of the Blue and Gold:

Playing Grammar Downlands is an experience that can’t be felt any other way. It’s an experience that makes you feel truly patriotic about the School and so proud to be at Grammar. That feeling of running onto the field is like no other. Throughout the week leading up to Grammar Downlands, the dorms are tense. They’re keen and ready to go because this is the round that matters most, not just to the players, but to every single one of us.

These last six rounds of footy have all led up to this moment, regardless of whether you’re playing on the field or watching in the stands. Seventy-six years of blood, sweat and tears. Seventy-six years of unmatched rivalry. Grammar Downlands isn’t just another day; it’s a day built on tradition, built on leaving everything you have on and off the field and doing everything 100%.

Grammar Downlands isn’t just a footy game; it’s a life lesson. For the past six years, I’ve been playing and cheering at Grammar, and this last year I have been part of the spirit squad, where I’ve found it’s a full-time job. All week leading up to the game, there is so much preparation that goes into getting the younger boys hyped up for Grammar Downlands, such as promo videos and war cry practice the day before, making sure everyone is just as keen as you.

After a morning of cheering on other teams, it is hard to keep your voice in good shape before the Firsts, so hydration is key. Plenty of electrolytes and water is crucial to keeping your voice as loud as possible and stopping you from getting a splitting headache, especially in the harsh, hot sun.

Now, crowd control is essential, not only to have the loudest war cries, but to keep the crowd as respectful as possible, especially if the scoreboard isn’t going our way, though the scoreboard won’t be a worry this weekend. This weekend is the most important game in Grammar’s year. It’s a game that you cannot miss, a game so good you will feel like you’re already on the field.

For people who haven’t experienced it before, get over to Downlands this weekend, regardless of whether you’re playing or watching, and just give it your all.

As a Year 12 student finishing up in a few months, there’s nothing I am more grateful for than being able to come to a school like this and experience the greatest of Grammar Downlands. It’s something I will always cherish.

So, for the students reading this, I expect everyone to be there. Absolutely everyone. If you play, you stay. For the supporters coming along, I hope you have a great day and are ready to hear us from the stands.

Extra Curricular

Term 3 always tends to be the busiest term of the year, with rugby and basketball dominating the headlines and minds of the boys. However, the boys have also been given the opportunity to gain some extra skills. Below we will be hearing from Brock Lawton who shares some insight into his leathermaking course and Toby Goldthorpe on the welding course held on a Thursday night at Toowoomba TAFE:

Over the past few weeks, I have been taking part in a bridle making course that has been held on Sundays at the DET Workshop. The course has been running from 8:30am to 3:00pm each Sunday for three weeks and there are ten of us involved. During the course, we have been learning how to work with leather properly and use the right tools to cut, shape and prepare it. We have also been making a horse halter, which has been a pretty interesting project because it takes a lot more skill and patience than I first expected.

I wanted to do the course because I thought it would be a good chance to learn something different and pick up a useful skill for the future. The leathermaker running the course is very experienced and there are also four other guys helping us, which has made it easier to learn and ask questions when we are unsure. One thing I found interesting was how strong the smell of leather is when you are working with it. Overall, it has been a really enjoyable experience and I am glad I decided to be part of it.

Over the past few weeks, our TAFE teacher has been showing us how to TIG weld, which is something most of us had not really done before. The course has been running at night time at Toowoomba TAFE for about a month, which has been a different but pretty good experience. At the start, we were given the choice to stay with TIG for the full course or swap to another type of welding, like stick or MIG. I decided to stick with TIG because I wanted to learn how to weld aluminium, which is a pretty useful skill to have.

So far, we have been practising different welds and joins, including butt joins and T joins and trying to improve how neat and strong our welds are. There are ten boys taking part, so it has been good learning alongside others who are also trying to improve. Safety has been a big focus as well and we have to wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and safety glasses. One thing I found interesting was that safety glasses block nearly all UV rays, which I did not know before. The welding helmets are also impressive because they have built-in fume extraction. Overall, the TAFE teacher has been really helpful and knowledgeable and I feel like I am learning a lot each session.

As we begin the final stretch of Term 3, it is worth remembering that there is still plenty to look forward to and plenty of reasons to be fully present. While thoughts may already be turning towards holidays and end-of-term plans, there are some significant Taylor House events still ahead of us. Our House Formal Dinner on Wednesday, 16 September will provide an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, congratulate and induct our 2027 leaders. It's a chance to celebrate friendships and memories that have shaped the year so far, before we back up the following day for the House Carnival. Currently sitting in fourth place, Taylor House is in need of a strong performance, and every point, every effort and every contribution will matter as we look to climb the ladder together.

This is also a time to continue striving for excellence. At Taylor, we work hard for one another, but now is when determination, discipline and work ethic must be put into practice as exams approach. Success is rarely comfortable and growth seldom occurs when we stay within our comfort zones. As the saying goes, now is the time to "get comfortable being uncomfortable". Seek the help you need, ask the questions that need asking, lock in those challenging concepts and commit to the practice required to perform at your best. The effort invested today will be reflected in the results achieved tomorrow.

For our Year 12 boys, the run to the finish line is well and truly underway. As the many "lasts" of your school journey begin to arrive, take a moment to appreciate them. Enjoy the experiences, value the friendships and be fully present in the opportunities still ahead. Look around at what is in front of you and make the most of every opportunity. Share the memories, celebrate the good times, reflect on how far you have come and take pride in the young men you have become.

Most importantly, leave no regrets. Finish strongly, finish together and finish in a way that you will look back on with pride for years to come.

The Academic in All of Us...A reflection on what we can be!

One of the great myths of education is that there are only some people who are “academic”.

We often picture an academic as someone surrounded by books, solving complex equations or studying at university. Yet when we step back and look at the world around us, a different picture emerges. The farmer analysing soil data and seasonal forecasts, the mechanic diagnosing faults through systematic testing, the builder interpreting plans, the nurse making critical decisions, the entrepreneur adapting to changing markets, and the student learning a new skill on a mountain bike trail all have one thing in common... they are learners.

They are academics.

At its heart, being an academic is not about wearing a particular label or achieving a particular ATAR. It is about being curious, asking questions, gathering information, testing ideas and continually improving. By that definition, every one of us is an academic in some form.

Recent research continues to reinforce the importance of lifelong learning. The Stanford Center on Longevity reports that ongoing learning is associated with greater adaptability, improved wellbeing and a stronger sense of purpose throughout life. Importantly, learning is no longer viewed as something confined to school or university; it is increasingly recognised as a lifelong practice that helps people thrive in a rapidly changing world.

That changing world is exactly why academic growth matters so much for our young men today.

The jobs our Year 8 students will eventually hold may not yet exist. Industries are being transformed by artificial intelligence, automation, advanced manufacturing, environmental science and rapidly evolving technology. The most valuable skill in this environment is not simply what you know today, but your ability to learn tomorrow.

Researchers examining adult learning have found that successful learners are not necessarily those with the highest natural ability, but those who continue to adapt, refine their thinking and engage in ongoing learning. In a world where knowledge changes quickly, the capacity to keep learning becomes a significant advantage.

Perhaps even more encouraging is what research tells us about the human brain. Studies on growth mindset continue to demonstrate that our abilities are not fixed. When we understand that intelligence, skills and expertise can be developed through effort, feedback and persistence, we become more resilient when challenges arise. Students who view setbacks as opportunities to grow are more likely to continue striving towards success than those who see difficulties as proof of limitation.

This is particularly important in a boarding environment.

Every evening during prep, our boys are doing much more than completing homework. They are developing habits that will serve them for life: concentration, perseverance, organisation, time management and self-discipline. These habits transcend subjects. Whether a boy eventually becomes an engineer, diesel mechanic, teacher, agricultural scientist, business owner, tradesman, farmer or healthcare professional, his future success will depend upon his ability to learn, adapt and solve problems.

At Toowoomba Grammar School, we often speak about developing the whole person. Academic growth is not separate from character development; it is deeply connected to it. Our own School philosophy recognises that success is not limited to one pathway. Whether a student is pursuing advanced mathematics, agricultural technologies, engineering, business, vocational education or any other field, we expect him to strive to be the very best version of himself. Indeed, our boarding philosophy emphasises that success may look different for each boy, but effort, growth and learning matter for all.

For parents, this offers an important reminder. Encouraging academic effort is not simply about marks on a report card. It is about helping young people develop the habits of mind that will allow them to flourish long after they leave school. Curiosity, persistence, reflection and a willingness to learn from mistakes are qualities that underpin success in every profession and every stage of life.

For our boys, the message is equally important.

Do not allow yourself to believe that you are "not academic". If you are learning, growing, practising, questioning and improving, you are already an academic. The student mastering algebra, the boarder learning to manage his time, the aspiring farmer studying new agricultural methods, the future mechanic understanding emerging technologies and the mountain biker refining racing techniques are all engaged in the same process: learning.

And learning is what academics do.

The future will belong to those who remain curious, adaptable and committed to growth. In that sense, being an academic is not something reserved for a select few. It is something that lives within each of us.

The challenge for all of us, parents and boys alike, is not whether we are academics.

It is whether we choose to keep learning.

Because in a world that never stops changing, our greatest strength will always be our willingness to grow.
